Airsoft for beginners: everything to know before your first game

What is airsoft, and how is it different from paintball?

Airsoft is a team-based tactical game in which players use realistic-looking replicas that fire small plastic BBs. Unlike paintball, the BBs leave no paint marks on clothing. Hits are called on the honour system — each player declares when they have been hit.

Replicas look and feel much closer to real military kit than paintball markers do. This makes the game better suited to tactical scenarios — team assaults, holding positions, VIP protection. Visually the difference is obvious too: on an airsoft field you see camouflage and field gear, not brightly coloured disposable overalls.

One more practical difference: airsoft BBs are biodegradable and keep base costs lower than paintball refills tend to. Polygon X uses only biodegradable BBs — and requires the same of players who bring their own.

Is airsoft safe, and does it hurt?

Airsoft is a regulated sport with strict safety standards. All replicas in Latvia must comply with a 1.5 J energy cap — this determines the maximum kinetic energy of the BB at the muzzle. At Polygon X all rental replicas are regularly chronographed to confirm they stay within this limit.

The short answer on pain: yes, a hit is noticeable, but the sensation is roughly comparable to a rubber band snap. Most participants stop thinking about it within the first few minutes because the pace of the game overrides it. The critical piece of protection is the face mask or goggles — Polygon X provides full-face protection to all rental players, and wearing it is mandatory for the entire duration of the game.

Gloves and a camouflage overall provide additional coverage — both are included in the Base package. Professional instructors and marshals monitor the game and intervene if rules are not followed. The single most important safety rule is simple: mask off — replica down.

Age rules in Latvia

Latvian law sets the minimum age for airsoft participation at 16. Players aged 16 to 18 may participate with written consent from a parent or legal guardian. This applies to all players at Polygon X.

What to wear and what to bring?

No special clothing is needed — comfortable sportswear that can get dirty is fine. Long trousers and long sleeves are a good choice: they reduce the sting of hits and protect against scratches in the undergrowth. Sturdy footwear with a thick sole is essential for outdoor play — waterproof boots or high-top trainers are ideal. Narrow city trainers and sandals are not suitable.

Everything else — replica, mask, overalls, gloves and BBs — can be rented on site. There is no need to buy anything before your first game.

If you already own airsoft equipment, you are welcome to bring it. Replicas are checked at Polygon X before play begins. Biodegradable BBs are a requirement — other types are not permitted on the field.

What it costs at Polygon X

Polygon X offers two rental packages for beginners and occasional players:

Budget package — €35 per person. Included: airsoft replica, full-face mask and 1,500 BBs. A good choice if the main goal is to try the activity at a lower entry price.

Base package — €50 per person. Included: airsoft replica, face protection, camouflage overalls, gloves and unlimited BBs for the entire session. This is the recommended option — no need to track remaining BBs mid-game.

If you bring your own gear, you get 50% off your group's chosen package price. Both rental packages also include a professional instructor, marshals throughout the game, and access to all game zones.

What does your first game look like?

Before play begins every participant goes through a briefing — covering safety rules, signals and game mechanics. Briefings are delivered in Latvian, English or Russian depending on the group. Beginners do not need to worry about prior experience — the instructor covers everything.

Polygon X has more than eight game zones, each with its own terrain character and scenario possibilities. In a typical session players go through two or three different missions across different zones. Popular zones for beginner groups include:

  • Diamond City — an urban labyrinth with buildings, narrow passages and CQB (close-quarters battle) scenarios. Well suited to team assault and defend missions.
  • Trench Line — a trench system modelled on WWI/WWII layouts. Horizontal combat with a defined front line.
  • Baltic Jungle — dense vegetation, boggy ground and narrow trails. A completely different dynamic from the urban zone.

A typical session runs two to three hours

A full session — briefing, kit-up, game play and breaks — fills approximately two to three hours. For most beginners this is the right level of intensity: long enough to experience several different scenarios, but not so long it becomes exhausting.
